Prior to beginning my university journey, I spent nearly 20 years working in a variety of customer service, sales and business development roles with large corporations including Westpac and Optus. Despite accomplishing a great deal in my career and being in a respected, well-paid position of seniority I was feeling increasingly dissatisfied and no longer content with my path. At the age of 42 I knew that I needed to make a change. More than anything else I wanted to give back to the community and help others to succeed. I have always built great relationships with children and after meeting with an occupational psychologist it became clear to me that I would make a wonderful teacher, the “dream” career that I had always kept in the back of my mind.
I often reflect on my own experience as a student and the variety of teachers I had along the way. I have wonderful memories of my favourite teachers and am incredibly grateful for how they shaped the person I am today and made a real difference in my life. This is the teacher I aspire to be.
Soon enough I had successfully completed the STAT test and was offered a place at Flinders University. I chose to study the Bachelor of Education (Primary R-7 & Special Ed) & Bachelor of Disability Studies as I believe that all children have a right to a good education and I wanted to be in a position to help and support the students who need it most to become confident and independent learners.
My pre-service teacher placements were incredibly enjoyable and highly successful which is evidenced by the exemplary feedback I received from staff, students and parents. Through my placements, in combination with my studies I have developed a strong understanding of various personalised learning programs and innovative educational techniques. When I am working with students, I focus on building strong relationships through listening, being patient and using humour to connect. I have found that finding a connection with students is the basis for the best learning outcomes. Through my extensive previous career experience I have acquired excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills which has helped me to succeed in my teaching.
On a personal level, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, watching sport and travelling. I have visited many places including a large portion of Australia and Europe, Asia, America and Pacific Islands. The opportunity to travel has provided me with many adventures and exposed me to different types of people and different ways of living and ultimately opened my mind. I am a naturally curious person and love the personal challenges and growth that I have been able to experience through travel. I believe that learning is a lifelong journey!
I am passionate about pursuing a career whereby my work can have a positive impact on the lives of young people and their families, particularly those facing obstacles and challenges to their education. I believe that my personal attributes of compassion, resilience and open-mindedness, along with my training and qualifications and extensive experience in various corporate roles will provide me with the basis for a long and successful teaching career.
